About: Allan May will talk on the history of the Mayfield Road Mob, Cleveland's most famous Mafia gang, which operated from the late 1910s until the mid-1940s. He will discuss the leadership, the crimes and the key members of the gang. Chief among the topics will be:
The Sly-Fanner Murders on New Years' Eve day 1920
The early days of Prohibition in Cleveland
The Lonardo-Porrello Corn Sugar War
The takeover of gambling and the numbers' rackets in the city
The work of Cleveland Safety Director Eliot Ness
The end of the Mayfield Road Mob
About the Speaker:
Allan May is also an authority on the history of organized crime in the United States and has a personal library of over 900 books on the subject. May is the author of five books - including two on the Mafia in the Mahoning Valley.
May's interest in organized crime began in the early 1960s when he saw his first episode of the "Untouchables" featuring Robert Stack as crime fighter Eliot Ness. May got his writing start with Jerry Capeci, the dean of mob writers, at Capeci's "Gangland News" website. May was the main organized crime writer for Court TV's website CrimeLibrary.com in the early 2000s, and was one of the main contributors to both AmericanMafia.com andCrimeMagazine.com. He has taught several courses on organized crime at Cuyahoga Community College and lectures at libraries throughout Northeast Ohio. He has appeared in documentaries and has been interviewed on both radio and television.
