Rubbish Containers
Recently we have seen large 96 and 64 gallon rubbish carts (wheeled containers) on tree lawns throughout the city. These cans are designed for automated collection vehicles and are too heavy and bulky to dump by hand.
City ordinance 951.02 limits container size to 40 gallons and a maximum weight of 40 pounds. Large containers designed for automated collection will not be accepted. Please keep your recyclables at least three feet away from your rubbish and remove your containers the same day after your rubbish has been collected.
Leaves
During the Fall Season; please remember not to put sticks and branches in your leaves for curbside pickup. Sticks and branches can jam the tube on our leaf vacuum machines and slow us down. Leaves should be placed on the grass, at the curb for pickup. Please DO NOT place leaves in the street, as this is a hazard to traffic and tends to block catch basins preventing drainage after rain.
Snow
The winter season is rapidly approaching. Please remember when there are two inches or more of snowfall a parking ban is in effect. When a parking ban is in effect it is illegal to park on city streets.
In order to provide the best possible service regarding snow removal please remember it is illegal to shovel, plow or blow snow into the street or pile snow on the public sidewalk in front of your home. Keeping these areas open will allow our crews to operate more efficiently. If you hire a contractor to plow your driveway this winter, make sure they are registered with our Police Department, and aware of our ordinances pertaining to snow removal.
*Please have your rubbish to the curb by 7:00 AM.

Agencies assisting the need often will appreciate having old furniture, magazines, clothing or other usable discarded materials. We suggest you contact one of these agencies when you have such items.
All waste material will be collected on your regular collection day. However, it will NOT be removed from the premises unless it is separated and prepared in accordance with the following listed rules:
YOUR RUBBISH should not be placed on the tree lawn before 5:00 PM prior to the day of collection, but not later than 7:00 AM on the collection day.
PLACE ALL CONTAINERS OR BAGS at the same location (tree lawn) so none will be missed by the collectors. Do not place anything you wish to keep, with or near the trash containers. It may be mistaken for rubbish and taken away. Materials left in garages, in front of garages or on porches will not be picked up.
EMPTY CONTAINERS must be removed from the tree lawn the same day that collection is made. The responsibility for these containers is beyond the control of the city.
CONTAINERS may be of galvanized or plastic, (paper bags or cardboard boxes not acceptable), not to exceed 40 gallons capacity or weigh more than 40 pounds when filled. Containers must be equipped with two lifting handles or a bail handle and be maintained in a sanitary condition. Do not fill containers above the brim to avoid spillage in handling. We encourage you to use plastic trash bags whenever possible.
LEAVES may be placed in metal or plastic containers, except in the Fall of the year, when the should be deposited in piles on the tree lawn. Do not place or burn leaves in the street.
LARGE BOXES must be collapsed and tied in bundles weighing not more than 40 pounds and put out with your recycling.
LUMBER, SMALL TREE AND HEDGE TRIMMINGS must be cut and bundled so that bundles are not longer that four feet or greater that 18 inches in diameter and not to exceed 40 pounds. Large cut branches to be stacked neatly for grinding. (Maximum 6.00 inch diameter).
LARGE ITEMS, i.e. refrigerators, washers, furniture, etc. must be dismantled as much as possible. Refrigerator and freezer doors must be removed prior to placement on the tree lawn for collection.
HEAVY RAINS, ICY STREETS, SNOW STORMS OR OFFICIAL HOLIDAYS sometimes delay schedules for a day.
THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS WILL NOT BE COLLECTED: Earth, rocks, broken concrete, building materials or tree debris left by private contractors.
PAINT AND PESTICIDES - Latex paint must be solidified by letting the paint dry out completely. Once this is done, it should be put out for refuse collection with the lid off, separate from your other refuse. A quicker way of doing this is to keep the lid off the can and mixing in some form of absorbent such as kitty litter. Oil base paint must be recycled and be taken to the City garage during normal weekend rubbish drop-off hours. Pesticides can also be dropped off during normal weekend drop-off hours.
The purpose of these regulations is to provide efficient service for our citizens at the lowest cost. Practical reasons exist for the limitations listed. For example, weight and size limits are imposed as a safety measure for our employees and also because of the size of the openings in our collection trucks.
The Lyndhurst Service Dept. provides residents with a weekly curbside recycling pickup. One green plastic recycling bin is provided to each household. Please place all recyclables in the green bin. No separation is necessary. Newspaper should be in paper bags (not plastic) or tied with twine and placed next to your bin.
Acceptable Recycling:
All Plastics #1 thru 7's
Aluminum, Steel, Bimetal Food Cans
Glass - Green, Brown and Clear Bottles and Jars
Motor Oil – In Tightly Sealed Containers
Computers/Monitors
Please place recycling and paper-cardboard away from rubbish – in order to minimize confusion.
The Lyndhurst Service Department recycles computers and monitors. Residents can place computers curbside next to their recycling bin for the scheduled weekly collection. Residents can also drop off computers and monitors at the Service Garage located at 5301 Mayfield Road. The hours for drop-off are 7:30 AM - 3:00 PM Monday through Friday and Saturday and Sunday, 11:30 AM - 3:30 PM.
The computers that are collected are taken to RET3 Corp. in Cleveland. This is a non-profit organization that refurbishes computers for the underprivileged and recycles other components.
Sewer maintenance consists of cleaning both the sanitary and storm sewer pipes (laterals), from your outside sewer cleanout (test tees). Both the sanitary and storm tees are usually located near the sidewalk under the grass area of your front yard.
The sanitary sewer services all drains inside your house and the storm sewer services the exterior of the home-ex: downspouts, driveway and garage drains, and the drain tile around the foundation of your home.
If you detect unusual odors from any drains, water seepage through your basement walls, water or sewage backup in your basement drains, call us at 440-473-5100 to schedule an appointment.
Each year hundreds of residents contact the Cuyahoga Soil and Water Conservation District regarding a host of environmental issues. If you are one of these residents, you may find the brochure below a good resource tool.
The Cuyahoga Soil and Water Conservation District staff developed this brochure to provide a quick response to county residents. All of the agencies were contacted to determine if they were the appropriate agency.
This tool can be obtained by clicking on the link below, which will open the document in PDF format, or you can obtain the document through the Cuyahoga Soil and Water Conservation District Website at: www.cuyahogaswcd.org.
