Rubbish Containers:
According to City Ordinance 951.02, you must place your household trash on the curb in City approved containers. Approved containers are: City-owned and issued 96-gallon green-wheeled carts for garbage and 64-gallon blue-wheeled carts for recyclables. All homes will be issued rubbish and recycling containers by the City of Lyndhurst. Please place your City trash and recycle containers at least 3 feet apart, side by side along the curb so that the truck’s mechanical arm can lift with ease to avoid obstructions. Other obstructions to avoid are fire hydrants, trees, telephone poles and signs.
 
Leaves:
During the Fall Season; please remember not to put sticks and branches in your leaves for curbside pickup. Sticks and branches can jam the tube on our leaf vacuum machines and slow us down. Leaves should be placed on the grass, at the curb for pickup. Please DO NOT place leaves in the street, as this is a hazard to traffic and tends to block catch basins preventing drainage after rain.
 
Snow:
The winter season is rapidly approaching. Please remember when there are two inches or more of snowfall a parking ban is in effect. When a parking ban is in effect it is illegal to park on city streets.
 
In order to provide the best possible service regarding snow removal please remember it is illegal to shovel, plow or blow snow into the street or pile snow on the public sidewalk in front of your home. Keeping these areas open will allow our crews to operate more efficiently. If you hire a contractor to plow your driveway this winter, make sure they are registered with our Police Department, and aware of our ordinances pertaining to snow removal.

Weekend Rubbish:
 
Rubbish and yard debris may be dropped off at the Lyndhurst Service Garage, located at 5301 Mayfield Road, Saturdays and Sundays, 11:30 AM - 3:30 PM. This service is for Lyndhurst residents only and proof of residency is required.
 
This service will end the weekend of November 14th/15th, but will start up again on April 3rd/4th 2010.
Holiday Collection:
 
On the following observed Holidays, there will be NO Rubbish/Recycling pickup. If your day of collection falls on any of these Holidays, your day of collection will be the following day. No other day of collection will be affected by these holidays.

Rubblish Collection Regulations:
 
All waste material will be collected on your regular collection day. However, it will not be collected from the premises unless it is separated and prepared in accordance with the following regulations.
 
The City Of Lyndhurst provides curb side collection to residential homes and condominiums. This service includes a weekly collection of household rubbish, yard waste and provides a weekly collection of recyclables.
 
Rules and Regulations:
 
1.) You must place your household trash on the curb in City approved containers. Approved containers are: City-owned and issued 96-gallon green-wheeled carts for garbage and 64-gallon blue-wheeled carts for recyclables. All homes will be issued rubbish and recycling containers by the City of Lyndhurst. All trash must be placed inside the City or approved trash container: if not, it will not be collected. Do not place rubbish into recycling containers. Recycling containers containing rubbish will not be collected. Additional containers can be purchased from the City if necessary.
 
2.) All other containers such as standard plastic, galvanized cans, kitchen cans, or laundry baskets are not acceptable and will not be emptied.
 
3.) Please bag all rubbish, secure the bag with a tie, and place in your 96-gallon trash containers.
 
4.) Do not place your City containers on the curb prior to 5:00 p.m. the day before collection or later than 7:00 a.m. on the day of collection.
 
5.) Have your city trash and recycle containers at least 3 feet apart, side by side along the curb so that the truck's mechanical arm can lift with ease to avoid obstructions. Other obstructions to avoid are fire hydrants, trees, telephone poles and signs.
 
6.) Empty containers must be removed from the tree lawn the same day that collection is made. Failure to do so can result in a citation and fine. (Ord. 951.99)
 
7.) The following materials will not be collected: earth, rocks, broken concrete or materials left by private contractors.
 
8.) Tires are not accepted. Please call the Service Department at (440) 473-5100 for disposal options.
 
9.) All organic waste (yard waste) including grass, hedge clippings and garden plants must be placed in paper yard waste bags not closer than 3 feet to rubbish and recycling carts. Yard waste bags are available at most retail outlets. Plastic bags and garbage cans filled with yard waste will not be accepted. All yard waste will be taken to a compost facility to be recycled.
 
10.) Leaves must be placed in paper yard waste bags except in the fall of the year, when they should be placed on the treelawn for vacuum collection. It is illegal to place leaves in the street.
 
11.) Small tree trimmings 4 foot and under must be bundled. Maximum bundle weight is 40 pounds.
 
12.) Large branches over 4 feet long (maximum 6 inch diameter) should be stacked neatly for chipping. Brush must be at least 4 feet from all rubbish and recycling containers as to not interfere with the mechanical arm on the collection trucks.
 
13.) Do not place paint in rubbish or recycling containers. All waste paint must be dropped of at the Lyndhurst Service garage during working hours.
 
14.) Explosives, poisons or any materials of any toxic nature should not be placed in rubbish or recycling containers. Hazardous Waste will be accepted seasonally during the weekend rubbish program. This program is available to Lyndhurst residents and is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30am to 3:30pm mid April through mid November.
 
15.) Heavy rains, icy streets, snow storms and official holidays sometimes delay the collection schedule. Please refer to the web site www.Lyndhurst-oh.com/servicedepartment for the holiday collection schedule.
 
16.) Large cardboard that will not fit in recycling bins must be collapsed, tied, bundled, no larger than 3' x 3' and placed next to the recycling container for collection.
 
The City will provide weekly pickup service of Bulk Trash on your normal collection day. Here is a brief list of acceptable bulk items for pickup:
 
Furniture, dressers, mattresses, couches, chairs, bookcases, house doors, storm doors, storm windows, bicycles, basketball hoops (dismantled), televisions, and appliances. Carpeting and fencing must be bundled/rolled, tied and no longer than 4 feet long and weigh no more than 40 pounds.
 
Please remember to keep all items at least 4 feet from all rubbish and recycling containers so as not to interfere with the mechanical arm on the collection trucks.
 
Special Pickup Large Volume
 
The City will provide a special pickup for City residents. Special pickups consist of house, garage, and move-out cleanouts of household trash and bulk items. This will be limited to two special pickups per year, per home. Please pre-schedule your special pickup by calling the Service Department at (440) 473-5100.
 
The purpose of these regulations is to provide efficient service for our residents at the lowest cost. Practical reasons exist for the limitations listed. For example weight and size limits are imposed as a safety measure for our employees and also due to the size of the openings on our collection trucks.
 
A clean city is a beautiful city. Help us keep Lyndhurst beautiful. Please post this in your garage. Please observe our rules, as they will be enforced. Failure to observe these rules is a Misdemeanor and subject to fines as provided in C.O.951.99.

Curbside Recycling Program:
 
The City of Lyndhurst Rolls Out New Recycling Program
 
The City of Lyndhurst will roll out a new recycling program very soon. Each resident will be provided with a wheeled cart container that will hold all of their recyclables which will include paper, plastics, glass, steel and aluminum cans.
 
This container can be easily wheeled to the curb. An automated collection truck will provide a weekly pick up and the recyclables will be taken to Waste Management's recycling facility in Oakwood Village.
 
We are encouraging our residents to recycle more. If we recycle more, less money will be spent burying trash at the landfill. This is better for our environment and helps us save precious tax dollars.
 
The move to automated single stream recycling will make it easier for our residents while at the same time lowering our operational costs significantly. Our projected savings should be over $100,000 per year once the program is up and running.
 
We are working very hard to lower costs and still provide excellent services. Please do your part and follow the guidelines for the new program.
 

 Questions and Answers about the new Recycling Program:
Q: When will I receive my cart?
A: The carts will be delivered between September 29th and October 10th. The new program will begin the week of October 13th.
 
Q: Where will it be delivered?
A: Every house will receive a new cart in front of their home on the treelawn.
 
Q: How many carts will I receive and how do I know it is mine?
A: Each household will receive one cart. The blue cart will have a serial number on it; the Service Department will have a database of all cart serial numbers. Please copy your cart's serial number and keep it with your records. The cart is owned by the City and stays "with the house". You are not to take it with you if you move, use it for other purposes, etc.
 
Q: Can I use the recycle cart for trash?
A: ABSOLUTELY NOT! If you do, it will not be picked up and you will have to empty it on your own.
 
Q: Why is it so important for everyone to use their new recycling cart?
A: The new blue cart will be the standard for all recycling. Green bins will no longer be collected.
 
Q: What should I do with my old green recycling bin?
A: Your old bin can be used to transfer recycling from your house to the new recycling cart. You can also use the green bin as a handy storage container in your house or garage. If you no longer want the green bin place it out on the treelawn empty next to the blue cart and we will collect it.
 
Q: Do I have to take the cart out every week?
A: No, you do not have to take the cart out every week. If it is only partially filled one week, you might want to keep it in your garage until it is full. You can also hold off after a heavy snowfall. However, we will pick it up every week even if it is only partially full. It's up to you.
 
Q: Is there a proper way to put the cart at the curb?
A: Yes, there are arrows on the cart that show you which direction it should face in order for the "arm" of the truck to pick it up. As always, you want to keep the cart at least five feet away from your trash so they are not mixed and the "arm" has room to grab the container. Please keep the cart away from hydrants, poles, trees or anything that could hinder the "arm" from grabbing the cart.
 
Q: When do I take the cart out?
A: Take your cart out on your normal trash day. Keep in mind, all residents are supposed to place the trash and recycling out after 5:00 p.m. the night before trash day - there is an ordinance prohibiting you from putting it out earlier. Also, please bring the carts, as well as your garbage cans, back in as soon as possible.
 
Q: Who is responsible for maintenance if your cart needs repair?
A: The new Toter carts have a ten year warranty from the manufacturer. The City of Lyndhurst Service Department will repair your cart or exchange it for a new cart, depending on circumstances and what repairs are warranted.

 Put all of your Recycling in the Blue Cart:
All of your recyclables should be placed in your new blue cart. This is known as single stream recycling.
 
Your cart should be wheeled close to the curb with the metal bar facing the street and no obstructions within five feet of the cart, not close to a telephone pole, fire hydrant, or rubbish.
 
If obstructions are close to the cart, the truck will not be able to lift the container to empty it.
 

 Single Stream Recycling Tips:
  • Flatten your cardboard boxes and place them inside your recycling cart. Boxes that do not fit inside your cart should be flattened and cut down to a 3' x 3' size, tied in bundles and placed next to your cart.

  • Place shredded paper in a brown paper bag before putting it in your cart.

    •  
  • Do not put plastic bags in your recycling cart.

    •  
  • Flattening boxes, cans and plastic bottles will save space in your cart for other recyclables.
    • Do not put trash, pet waste or yard waste in your blue recycling cart. Carts containing trash or yard waste will not be collected.
     

    		 Now You Can Recycle More:
    The Lyndhurst Recycling Program is being expanded to include more paper and plastic. The additional recycling will help to save resources, tax dollars and landfill space.
     
    Along with the usual glass containers, aluminum cans and steel cans our program will offer:

    In addition to newspapers, magazines, catalogs, and corrugated cardboard, you can new blue recycling cart to recycle these new paper products:
     
  • Junk Mail

  • Paper Grocery Bags

  • Envelopes

  • Office and Computer Paper

  • Cereal and Cracker Boxes

  • Soda Cases, Etc.

  • Paper Egg Cartons

  • Magazines (Including Glossy Print)

    •  

    		 There are certain papers that we cannot recycle, they are:
  • Pizza Boxes

  • Wax Coated Boxes (i.e. Milk Cartons, Juice Boxes, Etc.)

  • Detergent Boxes

    •  

    		 Recycle More Plastics:
    The recycling program will begin accepting the following plastic products:
  • All plastic bottles Numbers 1 through 7 (except Motor Oil bottles)

    •  

    		 Plastics We Do Not Recycle:
    There are still a lot of plastics we do not recycle because there are no markets for the material and the recycling center will not accept them. Please make sure you recycle only those items we can recycle.
     
    Do not recycle the following plastic regardless of the number on the bottom:
     
  • Deli Containers

  • Frozen Food Containers

  • Microwave Dinner Plates

  • Plastic Bags

  • Plastic Film or Wrap

  • Styrofoam

  • Plastic Buckets or Pails

    		 COMMON RECYCLING ERRORS:
    The Recycling Department recently sorted through recyclables we collected looking for some of the common mistakes Lyndhurst recyclers make. Here are the most common items that residents put in their recycling carts that should have been put in the trash.
     
    Most Common Violations:
     
  • Using recycling container for trash.

  • Putting recycling in old buckets, bins or trash cans that we assume is trash.

  • Not putting or placing recycling in a separate area - please place at least five feet from other containers.

  • Not cleaned or rinsed out - No dirt or soil in yard planters or pots, no food residue, no cat litter, etc.

  • No window glass, ceramic dishes or cups.

  • No small appliances - coffee makers, toasters, etc.

  • No plastic buckets, bins, pails, trash cans, broken laundry baskets, trash can lids, milk crates, pop cases, etc.

  • No phone books or styrofoam (whole pieces or peanuts).

  • Don't hide unacceptable items in recycling or trash: Paint, styrofoam peanuts, etc.

    • Computer Recycling:
     
    The Lyndhurst Service Department recycles computers and monitors. Residents can place computers curbside next to their recycling bin for the scheduled weekly collection. Residents can also drop off computers and monitors at the Service Garage located at 5301 Mayfield Road. The hours for drop-off are 7:30 AM - 3:00 PM Monday through Friday and Saturday and Sunday, 11:30 AM - 3:30 PM.
     
    The computers that are collected are taken to RET3 Corp. in Cleveland. This is a non-profit organization that refurbishes computers for the underprivileged and recycles other components.
    Tires:
     
    The City of Lyndhurst will be accepting discarded tires during the month of September only.
     
    The tires must be off the rims and dropped off during our weekend rubbish drop-off hours (indicated above).
     
    Residents may also elect to take unwanted tires to a tire dealership for disposal.
    Sewer Problems:
     
    Sewer maintenance consists of cleaning both the sanitary and storm sewer pipes (laterals), from your outside sewer cleanout (test tees). Both the sanitary and storm tees are usually located near the sidewalk under the grass area of your front yard.
     
    The sanitary sewer services all drains inside your house and the storm sewer services the exterior of the home-ex: downspouts, driveway and garage drains, and the drain tile around the foundation of your home.
     
    If you detect unusual odors from any drains, water seepage through your basement walls, water or sewage backup in your basement drains, call us at (440) 473-5100 to schedule an appointment.
    Cuyahoga Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) Information:
     
    Each year hundreds of residents contact the Cuyahoga Soil and Water Conservation District regarding a host of environmental issues. If you are one of these residents, you may find the SWCD Brochure a good resource tool.
     
    The Cuyahoga Soil and Water Conservation District staff developed the SWCD Brochure to provide a quick response to county residents. All of the agencies listed within the brochure were contacted to determine if they were the appropriate agency.
