Description: Gates Mills Environmental Education Center provides a place for students to learn and practice horticulture in a Tech Prep program with college credit available.

Located on land that once housed a Coast Guard station, the school, then called the Gates Mills Horticulture Center, opened in 1974.

Since that point it has undergone a $1 million expansion thanks to a state grant and has changed its name to better represent its current mission. It's part of Excel Technical Education Career Consortium (Excel TECC), which serves the school districts of Aurora, Beachwood, Chagrin Falls, Mayfield, Orange, Richmond Heights, Solon, South Euclid-Lyndhurst and West Geauga.

Most students attend for two years, splitting their days between horticulture and traditional academics, either at their district's school or on the center's computers. Some students earn credits simultaneously at Cuyahoga Community College East.

The curriculum is designed to prepare students for a wide array of careers in horticulture. The center also hosts an annual open house in May and seasonal plant sales for the public.
