From The Building Department: Home Winterization: What Should Be Done to Protect Your Home?

Now is the time, you should he thinking about what needs to be done to protect your home from Cleveland's nasty winters. Here is a list of some minor maintenance items that should be checked before the freezing temperatures hit.
 
  • Furnace Inspection: Have your furnace cleaned and serviced by a certified HVAC company.


  • Exterior Doors and Windows: Make sure all doors and windows have the proper weather stripping to prevent cold air penetration, Caulk and paint all wooden exposed windows to prevent rotting.


  • Inspect Roof, Gutters, and Downspouts: Check flashing around entire home to prevent water penetration; Clean out all gutters and downspout of debris. Replace any worn or missing roof shingles.


  • Fireplace and Chimney Maintenance: Have the chimney swept out by a professional and tuck-pointed if needed. A screened cap should be attached to the top of the chimney to keep out birds and rodents.


  • Foundation and Landscaping: Clean all debris around foundation and seal all points of entry for rodents and small animals. Trim back any tree limbs that are hanging over power lines, house, or chimney.


  • Prevent Frozen Water Lines: Insulate any exposed plumbing pipes; Always keep your thermostat set above 55 degrees. Locate your main water shut-off in case of an emergency.


  • Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Install a smoke detector on each level of your home and make sure the batteries are new; Install a carbon monoxide detector near your furnace and hot water tank.


Follow this check list and protect your home from further expensive maintenance repairs.
