The Lyndhurst Police Department continues to make traffic safety a priority. Recently more enforcement attention has been directed toward texting while driving, improper use of lanes, driving left of center and driving through safety zones. The lane and safety zone violations typically occur when a motorist approaches an intersection to make a left hand turn and travels through the safety zone or over the center line into the turn lane for the opposite direction. Impatient drivers commit these violations to avoid waiting in the through lane to properly enter the turn lane. Crossing into a lane meant for vehicles traveling in the opposite direction presents obvious dangers. Safety zones, those areas of the roadway striped with conspicuous diagonal yellow lines, are an important part of the lane usage design in each area and are "no man's land" for vehicles.

Over 15 people are killed nationally and more than 1,200 people injured daily in crashes involving distracted driving--driving while doing another activity that takes your attention away from operation of your vehicle. These activities increase the chance of a motor vehicle crash. There are three main types of distraction:
  • Visual - Taking your eyes off the road.
  • Manual - Taking your hands off the wheel.
  • Cognitive - Taking your mind off what you are doing.
The City of Lyndhurst passed a No Texting law in 2009. Other communities in the area have similar ordinances restricting the use of cell phones to reduce the dangers of these forms of distracted driving which includes hand-free devices. Safest use of a cell phone in a vehicle is done when you are off the roadway and parked.

Traveling through safety zones, left of center and distracted driving are dangerous. Hold off on that text or call until you can pull off the road. And commit to "driving while patient." You may prevent a serious crash and/or avoid a hefty fine.
