Working to keep our roads safe is a priority. Now that school is in session, the Lyndhurst Police Department Traffic Safety units will be enforcing school zone speed limits. Motorists are reminded to obey school zone speed limits and to always use caution whenever and wherever children are present. Parents are encouraged to discuss safe driving practices with young drivers and to discourage them from driving while using handheld communication or entertainment devices. All drivers are reminded of the risks associated with "driving while distracted." The City of Lyndhurst prohibits texting while driving. Fines for convictions range from $100.00 to $500.00.

As we approach winter, many residents will be establishing agreements with private snow plow companies. Because your agreement is a civil matter, the police department is limited in how it can address problems that may arise. It has been our experience, based on complaints, that the least expensive companies do not always provide the best service, often because they take on too many customers. Only use reputable contractors who have good references. Your own neighbors may be a good source. You can call the Lyndhurst Police Department Traffic Bureau at 440-473-5116 to confirm that your contractor has a city-issued permit. Your responsibilities include making sure that your plower does not block sidewalks, pile snow higher than three feet or closer than ten feet to the curb, or push snow onto your neighbor's property or into the street.

Remember that residents and community members are the eyes and ears of the police department. We rely on you to report suspicious circumstances. If you see something, say something. Don't hesitate to call us. 440-442-1234.
