Don is in our hearts again, but this time tears have replaced joy. In June, Don was diagnosed with liver cancer. Friends and family have offered encouragement, and he has sworn to fight this disease. But it seems each week has brought more bad news. Don began his police career with Lyndhurst in 1996. Since that time, we have been blessed with the services of this 38-year-old law enforcement professional, who is as generous a listener as he is with a smile. In light of what is happening to Don, many of us on the police force have paused daily from our often hectic profession to reflect on what’s important. We need look no further than the example Officer Mantell has set for us as a consistently good-natured and conscientious worker, devoted both to the public he serves and to his family. His goal has been to return to work as a Lyndhurst patrol officer, but doctors recently discovered that the cancer has spread to other major organs. At this time, Don is resting comfortably after undergoing two surgeries to remove brain tumors. We ask for your prayers for Don, his wife, 4-year-old daughter and 14-month-old triplets. Additionally, a fund was started to ease their financial burden, since Don is the sole provider for his family. You can make donations at: Don Mantell Benefit Fund c/o Lyndhurst Police Department 5301 Mayfield Rd. Lyndhurst, OH 44124 Or, donate at any Citizens Bank Branch or online at www.DonMantell.org. This website will be "information central" for several fund-raising activities to benefit Don, his wife, and four children. |
