Duties & Responsibilities:
 
The Lyndhurst Police Department is comprised of 28 sworn Police Officers. This includes the Chief of Police, Executive Lieutenant, Traffic Lieutenant, Detective Lieutenant, 2 Shift Lieutenants, 4 Shift Sergeants, 2 officers assigned to the Detective Bureau, and 16 Patrolmen including a K-9 Unit handler. Additionally, the Department has an Administrative Assistant, a Community Relations Liaison/School Resource Officer, a Communications Center Coordinator, 5 full time Dispatchers, part time Dispatchers, Special (Reserve) Patrol Officers, Auxiliary Police Officers and School Crossing Guards.
 
The Patrol Division is responsible for patrolling and protecting a city of 14,001 people and an area of 4.3 square miles, 24 hrs per day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year.

Fingerprinting of Civilians:
 
The Lyndhurst Police Department provides fingerprinting services to civilians under the following Criteria:
 
1.) When requested by a resident of the City of Lyndhurst.
 
2.) When requested by an employee of a business located in the City of Lyndhurst as a condition of pre-employment or current employment.
 
There is no charge for this service. Fingerprinting will be done anytime of the day subject to availability of an officer to do the fingerprinting. These are ink prints only, and you must bring a fingerprint card with you.

Many Ohio employers, both public and private, are required to perform background checks on new hires and individuals obtaining professional licenses. All fingerprints must be submitted to BCI through WebCheck or card scan unless exemption reasons are met. See the Ohio Attorney General website for more information along with WebCheck locations.

Records:
 
Public records requests are received during the following hours:
 
Monday through Friday, except during holiday times:
 
8:00 AM - 12:00 PM
 
and
 
1:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Basic Patrol:
 
The backbone of the Police Department is its basic patrol. These are the men and women who patrol the streets 24 hrs per day 365 days a year. They answer calls for service, assist other departments in the city, enforce the traffic laws, maintain order, protect and serve.
 
As they are the first on the scene of a serious incident, be it a traffic crash or criminal act, how well they do their job will determine how successful we are in solving the crime or determining what violation of law was committed that caused the accident.
 
The visibility of the patrol division assists the Department in suppressing criminal activity. For this reason, the Lyndhurst Police Department vehicles are the traditional black and white paint pattern. Patrol officers spend a portion of their tour of duty on foot patrol in the business district and schools.
 
The Patrol Division is comprised of 4 five-officer shifts. They patrol 4.3 square miles and protect 14,001 residents. Additionally, the Department offers Bicycle Safety talks, Crime Prevention Information, Child Photo ID Pictures, and Fingerprinting of Civilians. An Auxiliary Police unit with 13 members supports the Basic Patrol. Four of these Auxiliary Police Officers are also sworn officers.
 
The officers on the Basic Patrol receive training each year of the latest changes in the law, recent Supreme Court decisions that affect their responsibilities, annual firearm qualification, non-lethal defense training and a host of other schools that make them a highly trained unit.

Communications:
 
The communication section of the Lyndhurst Police Department provides 24 hour dispatch service to the Police and Fire Departments. The radio network operates in the 400 mhz & 800 mhz frequency spectrums and has both repeated and simplex systems. Additionally, all patrol vehicles are equipped with Mobile Data Terminals that connect the vehicles to both the Dispatch Center and the Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS ). The Lyndhurst Police Department shares the radio network with 5 other cities that make up SPAN, the Suburban Police Anti-Crime Network.
 
The Communication Center is located in the Police Complex on the first floor. It is staffed by 5 full time Dispatchers, a Dispatch Coordinator and part-time dispatchers. Overall control of the Center is the responsibility of the Executive Lieutenant.
 
Calls for service range from life threatening situations to simple street directions.
 
The Communication Dispatcher responsibilities include:
 
1.) Receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls for service, directing Police and Fire personnel in response to calls and providing an information service to the Public.
 
2.) Maintaining appropriate records, logs and audio records of calls for service.
 
3.) Training new communication personnel.

Domestic Violence Victim Assistance Program:
 
The Lyndhurst Police Department began its Victim Assistance Program in 1996. Kathy Tomaro, who had specialized in the domestic violence/sexual assaults/child abuse area prior to joining the Lyndhurst Police department in 1995, began this program at the request of then Chief Sherwood Eldredge.
 
This program has become an integral part of the Police Department and has helped numerous victims and been a part of successful prosecution of the defendants. The City Prosecutor now works hand in hand with our Victim Assistance Program, as well as Municipal Court Judge Mary K. Bozza. The Lyndhurst Police Department is the only police department in the Hillcrest area to have a program like this.

Animal Control:
 
The City of Lyndhurst contracts with an animal control service. Their services include:
 
1.) Providing traps and assisting with the removal of nuisance wildlife.
 
2.) Investigating Animal Bite Cases
 
3.) Enforcement of City Ordinances pertaining to the control of animals.
 
4.) Provides advice to residents experiencing animal problems.
 
If you have a problem with skunks, raccoons or other wildlife, the animal service will visit your property, educate and advise on possible remedies, such as removal of unintended food sources or enclosure of affected areas. If suggested remedies do not resolve the problem, the City may provide a trap. If the target animal is trapped, the trap and animal will be removed.
 
The animal service does not deal with vermin such as bees, wasps, rats, mice, etc. They will remove animals from within the living quarters of your residence.
 
Listed below are some of the most frequently used ordinances:
 
1.) Feeding of wildlife and stray animals prohibited.
 
2.) Animals (dogs and cats) are not permitted to run at large.
 
3.) Dogs must display a license.
 
4.) The owner of any animal will be held liable for damage caused by such animal.
 
5.) Dogs must be on a leash when in public.
 
6.) Owners must pick-up after their animals.
